Re: Trip to the Mâconnais and Beaujolais

Alex,
Thanks for the detailed trip report. I'm reminded to look out for more Saint Veran. An overlooked appellation; the wines have alot of energy and should indeed be considered "baby Pouilly".

I drank a 1999 Tyee Pinot Noir in 2019 at age 20 years old. The last vintage that Barney Watson made there. It had lost some fruit but was still drinking well!

Re: How old do you like to drink Oregon Pinot Noir?

I lived outside of Portland for about 5 years. The sweet spot for me is the 8 to 10 year mark, they seem to really 'settle in' at that range. Dundee I would go on the earlier side 7-8 yrs, Eola Amity more structure on the later side 10-11 yrs

Re: Recommendation : white wines for the summer

Back in March I was in Florida playing golf and opened a grocery store wine on a whim. The wine was 2021 Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuisse. OMG, was it pure deep and long. Still is. Do not miss this. Total Wine has it for like $26.

Re: Disappointment with certain wines

The search. The buying. The storage. The waiting. The expectation. The good moment. The opening. The tasting. The disappointment.

I recently opened at 1992 Heitz Martha's for my son (his birthyear wine) on a casual weekend. It was badly corked.

Someone had mentioned the 2013's having a drier style. The 2013 Ridge Pagani is anything but dry. A throwback late harvest style that hits on all cylinders today. A substantial portion of Alicante in that one too.

Re: In 30 words or less, describe your wine epiphany.

Has to be the 1978 Clos du Val Cabernet, some older cabs were being poured by the glass by a generous (and knowledgeable) steward at Sportsman's Wine Bar in Phoenix. I believe that was in about 1990, so it was 12 years old at that point.

Art, you are right. I opened my last bottle of 2000 LOdP about a year ago and wrote "plenty of clay on the nose and a deep core of cherry". The previous bottles were so angry and shut and oaky that they were undrinkable.

I purchased the 2006 La Lagune and Domaine de Chevalier several years ago at a nice discount (the release prices were significantly inflated due to the 2005 vintage!). I haven't dared to open one yet, as they can only be better at age 15 or 20.

1989 Franc-Mayne, St. Emilion

Took this out to a new local restaurant to celebrate Valentine's and a somewhat belated 25th. The '89 Franc-Mayne delivered in spades and was every bit as good as the hype. Really nice perfumed nose with hints of band-aid and cherry preserves. On the palate, there was incredibly bottle-sweet fruit a...

2000 Les Ormes de Pez, Saint Estephe

Les Ormes de Pez has alway been one of my favorite Bordeaux's, but I have no idea why. This 2000 was once an angry young man who closed his business down. It has now blossomed into a very good wine, with plenty of clay on the nose and a deep core of cherry. Some cherry pit in there too. This ain't n...

2006 de Fieuzal, Pessac-Leognan

1st night: Fairly tight at first, with a textbook gravelly nose, some firm tannins make their presence known. After about an hour this opens up nicely, some sweet secondary fruit balances things out. 3rd night: this has settled down easy and not lost a step, bottle sweetness is there in spades. Lack...

Stefan,
No, I was not joking, but you are right - the 84 is not in the same league as the 86 and 89 Meyney. But, I have had the 85 and the 84 is right there along with it. Very surprising showing for an 84, I would agree with you there. Probably due to the Cordier greatness in that era I suspect.

Jim, I have had that happen to me where I had surgery and didn't drink wine for a month and when I had my first bottle it was too overwhelming. I like the analogy of not playing guitar for 6 months and then you need to get your callouses back to iron things out.

Re: What is your Lynch/Angelus/La Lagune/Pavie Maquin?

Pichon Comtesse Lalande - always hits the right buttons for me, maybe is it the feminine style or the cab franc that haunts me.

Lynch Moussas - cannot really describe why. I like the label colors. 1996 made me a believer, the 2002 cemented it.

Cork had some tartrate crystals attached; I've never seen that with a Bordeaux. Nice nose of saddle leather and band-aid.
