Re: Visit to Chateauneuf
If you like to hang out in a small town 2 days are fine but after several trips I found one day enough. It is as Alex says, small and hot so an appointment in the a.m., lunch at a good restaurant (there are only a few), and a tasting in the afternoon should be a good one day trip. Two days will allo...

Nice to see this chateau doing so well. I wonder at what point in time during the ripeness revolution they turned the corner. Along with the other Cantenac (Brane) they were never on their game from the 70's

Nice to know this CDP style is still out there, of course in an '"older" vintage. A treat with certain foods for those who like a bit of the rustic style.

In the heart of Pomerol. Never heard of it till suggested by retailer at $40. Apparently a better vintage in Pom than St Em (depending on the wine). Deep purple/brown core, with garnet rim. Dusty nose with blue/black fruits. Hints of currants. Cherry-like taste, tart, textural but not overly ripe. S...

I have been drinking a lot of Burgs too, but mostly trying the 2011s. The whites seem pure and refined and very good drinking now although the Pulignys, etc will improve. Reds good to me for early drinking at the Bourg rouge level up to say, Savigny les Beaune. Don't have enough older clarets to dri...

Re: Can a winemaker, can make good wines on regular terroir?
Strict selection from a regular terroir will give you the best of a regular terroir, but it will be different material than the best selection from a great terroir. The difference in good and great terroirs often can be attributed to the soil. One can achieve the same ripeness from neighboring plots...

Really like the back and forth here that leads to an overall positive about CDRs. Nobody really disagrees but the elegant to chunky style leads to debate. Values still remain for now but for how long if producers are going to concentrate the wines even more, like O.R. was saying originally. Don't wa...

CDRs at an all time high and the Grenache handles the range of styles well. I agree with David again. I may even open a 2010
Fontbonau (spelling may be off) tonight. But I understand the too big argument to a point, depending on the wine.

Should have decanted this so it took a while to open. Dark brick brown middle, garnet rim. Smokey light oak in nose, blackberries, plums and other dark fruits later. Pristine storage conditions make guessing older vintages difficult when dealing with great Bordeaux, at
least to my(and most of my fellow tasters) palate. Most of us miss by 10 years when dealing with vintages from
the 80s. Structural staying power, these classics are. Great post. JM
