Re: Intellectual Challenge - Premier Cru Look Alikes
Robert -Interesting selections..having not tasted either of your recommendations, I'm initially surprised that neither choice is from Pessac/Graves. What makes them reminiscent of HB?

Re: Intellectual Challenge - Premier Cru Look Alikes
Did anyone ever get back to you about a lookalike for HB? I'm still searching...and would love some suggestions.

Re: What is your Lynch/Angelus/La Lagune/Pavie Maquin?
Gotcha...I ask as I just bought some bottles for my Dad...vintage is 1945 so maybe they made it better then :) And hopefully the juice isn't the 1975 vintage with different window dressing and being sold as a 1945. Good, not perfect provenance. Good, but not perfect bottle condition. Decent price. M...

Tom in DC - When did R-G go south? I ask because John Gilman suggested I try that as an example of traditional BDX.

Re: Anyone board members in San Diego?
Tom - SD is a great place to visit. I would say the BYOB is okay (compared to Chicago, my reference point), but it is a casual city so you can usually get around it. Some great restaurants, middle of the road on up to Addison (our gold standard). I'm headed to DC for the Bears game in October with m...

Re: 2012 Bordeaux
Any chance you have Gil's coverage on the '11s? That is our anniversary year and I'm trying to decide if BDX is the way to go for a couple cases, or a different region, even though most had a tough years except Sauternes.

Re: Shopping Around - WineBid? WineCommune? Commerce Corner?
Good feedback guys...I've watched WineBid for a while and made occasional purchases. For older BDX that get shipped, do you let them sit for a month, 3 months, 6 months? I've seen Gilman recommend 6+ months. Any experiences here?

Shopping Around - WineBid? WineCommune? Commerce Corner?
Unfortunately my parents waited to have me second so I was in diapers in the good ol' days of <$100 FGs, so I am now playing catch-up and trying to experiment with different producers from different vintages. Any preferred places to get <$150 pre-1995 Bordeaux? Winebid? Wine Commune? Commerce Corner...

Re: Is Parker the new Gilman?!
As a big fan of Gilman's palette, I hesitantly share some of the producers he provided in a recent personal email that represent classically-styled BDX. Obviously for purposes of this thread, Figeac is on this list. He also places the 2008 vintage in front of the '09 and '10. Beychevelle – Saint Jul...

Buying advice needed: Different labels on older BDX?
I'm looking to buy some BDX thru auction from the 50's and 60's, and am noticing differences in the labels when I research at Wine-Searcher and CellarTracker. Is this typical of the times or a huge red flag?

Seeking advice on "old school" producers in BDX
What estates make very classic styles of wines that in recent vintages can still give me an idea of “old school” Bordeaux (i.e - pre consultants)? I want to do a tasting of the classically-structured wines in the region.

Re: Guidelines for tasting young BDX? Wally's UGC 20
From an online interview with John Kolasa, Winemaker at Chateau Rauzan-Ségla: Q: So I just tasted the 2009 vintage. What am I supposed to look for in tasting a young Bordeaux, to know how it’s going age or if it’s going be a great wine in 10, 20, or 30 years? A: If people are looking at you and you ...
Re: 2010 UGC
I noticed this active thread after posting starting a new thread and I would appreciate your pointers. My wife and I are headed to LA UGC event and we are considering purchasing some of the 2010 vintage for long-term cellaring. I have not bought young Bordeaux in case format. What are your guideline...

Guidelines for tasting young BDX? Wally's UGC 20
My wife and I are headed to Wally's UGC event in Los Angeles later this month and we are considering purchasing some of the 2010 vintage for long-term cellaring. While we have 350+ bottles at home and off-site storage, we have not bought young Bordeaux in case format. Additionally she wants to pick ...
