Chateau Meyney 2019
Chateau Meyney 2019
A beautiful, classically styled red Bordeaux, but rather precocious. Medium plus bodied with a velvety texture. Flavors are dominated by an earthy core. Long finish. Notes of subtle black cherry and leather. Hint of tobacco on the nose. Tasted twice in 2023, the second time a bit more modern in character. Will it age? If you can keep your hands off it!

Re: Chateau Meyney 2019
Much thanks for the note, Riton, and welcome to Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts! Makes me want to go out and get a half dozen.

I wonder if they will ever recover the magic they had a generation or so ago.
Re: Chateau Meyney 2019
Good to see you enjoyed the Meyney.
I went there with Izak Litwar a couple of months ago. We tasted Meyney alongside the great growth Pauillac, Château Grand Puy Ducasse, also owned by the same bank, the Crédit Agricole. Meyney was clearly the better wine.
I have enjoyed many bottles of Meyney over the years and never really felt that they went through a bad patch.
To me, Meyney is a shining example of value for money in Bordeaux.
If I were being provocative, i'd ask: is there a California Cab that can compete in that price range?

Totally agree with Alex.
Btw, this wine beats many Cru Classes in upper class when Farr Vintners Southwold tasting takes place year after year.

Alex,
There is nothing, I mean nothing even remotely close to Meyney coming out of California in that price range. I have been let down again and again by the Napa Cabs of the world (not to mention most of these producers are now charging in the $75-$100...for their entry bottling!). I think I got my 2019 Meyney for $30 or so...so I can buy 3 Meyney bottles for 1 of these mediocre, overpriced, Cali Cabs. Meyney is without a doubt one of the best wines in Bordeaux for the price.

Re: Chateau Meyney 2019
I stocked up on the 2014 Meyney, which I have loved the two or three times I've tried it. Gotta get some 2019 Meyney.
Re: Chateau Meyney 2019
I just popped a bottle of the 2014 about a week ago. With an hour of air it was very enjoyable. It's young with some good tannins and with another 3-5 years I expect great things.

Had a 2006 recently-drinking better than expected.
Re: Chateau Meyney 2019
BV's Rutherford, and sometimes Napa, bottlings are pretty solid at similar price points; I purchased the former in 2001 and 2013. But it can be slim pickings elsewise.

Re: Chateau Meyney 2019
Boy that's stretching it, Arv.
Those $80ish Cali cabs I had last month were pretty weak, the $40ish Mondavi was pretty good, but no $30 Meyney.

That's a fair point.
