2016 Larrivet Haut Brion

Post by barsacpinci »

Wanted to open a 2016 and looked for one of the most inexpensive in the cellar to get an idea of how they are progressing. Disappointing. Thin, hot, boring. Probably why it is inexpensive.

But I did buy some 2019 Malartic Lagraviere Blanc which I’m excited to try.

Thankfully only one bottle in the cellar. It's a head scratcher reading your impression vs the CT notes.

Had this with our Christmas day meal. First time we've had anything from this chateau. Decanted for an hour. I agree, it was disappointing. Color was lighter than expected. The tannins were silky but not much to the nose and the flavor was basic red fruit with a hint of baking spice. Not what I was expecting for a $50 bottle.

My nephew, who lived with us while he was in high school, came over that day and this was his first glass of Bordeaux. I felt bad that this was his first impression of Bordeaux. When he came over about two weeks later, I opened a bottle of 2019 Lilian Ladouys. Much better. He too preferred the Ladouys over the Larrivet.

Yeah! I thought it would be better too based on CT notes. Either they all have bad palates or I had an off bottle!

Larrivet Haut Brion in white is better than the red.

Definitely! I had the white from the same year last September and was very pleased. Nice sipper at the beach in the late summer!

Personally, i have never been a fan of the red Larrivet, but i never tried an aged one.

I always thought the young red wine is too concentrated and/or oaky, to be balanced.
