Masters Champions Dinner Wines and Menu

Post by RPCV »

Rory has very good taste in wines and his menu looks to be just as spectacular.

2015 Salon “S” Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Champagne

2022 Domaine Leflaive, Batard-Montrachet

1990 Chateau Lafite Rothschild from Pauillac in Bordeaux (“The wine that I drank the night that I won the Masters,” he said.)

1989 Chateau d'Yquem from Sauternes in Bordeaux (“My birth year, and I think every great meal deserves to be finished off with Chateau D’Yquem. It is like liquid gold,” he said.)

Appetizers

Dates stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon. The recipe belongs to his mother, Rosie.

Grilled elk sliders (McIlroy said he was eating a lot of elk leading up to the Masters last year.)

Rock shrimp tempura

Georgia peach and ricotta flatbread with hot honey

First course

Yellowfin tuna carpaccio

“It’s a really thin slice of French baguette with a really thin slice of foie gras on top of that and tuna carpaccio,” he said. “It’s a really simple dish, but every time we go to that restaurant (Le Bernardin), that’s the one thing that I have to have.”

Main course

Wagyu filet mignon or seared salmon

Side dishes

Traditional Irish Champ (creamy mashed potatoes mixed with green onions, butter and milk)

Sauteed brussels sprouts

Glazed carrots with brown butter

Crispy Vidalia onion rings

Dessert

Sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream on warm toffee sauce

I just saw this posted on PGA Golf and my respect for Rory just went up quantum fold. 1990 Lafite and 89 Y'Quem are great choices. Not bad for a 36 yr old superstar to have this knowledge about wines. Who says money can't buy you everything!!

Had the 1990 Lafite with Stuart this winter in Fort Lauderdale, it was sublime. 100+.

That Leflaive is way too young. Guess he didn't have the means to back fill.

Stu,

The wines are all from Augusta Nationals cellar. They choose what's available on the list or they source in the request. Amazing they have or could find enough 1990 Lafite for a dinner party for around 50 or so!! The host still pays for everything though which is still a sizeable number. Maybe an opportunity for the Rudi's of the world!!

I agree Rory seems more likeable (if not more enviable) based on his appreciation/zeal for raiding Augusta’s wine cellar. I say well done. But at the same time I think we ate nearly as well and drank even better at Jim’s summer shindig in Lewiston. Maybe he should envy us!

I’m not sure if it’s the same case but Shane Lowery bought a case of 90’ Lafite from Augusta’s wine cellar as a gift to Rory last year after his win.
