TN: Ch Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 2004 and Ch Leoville Las Cases 1964

Post by KevinH »

Two wines for Easter

1964 Château Léoville Las Cases - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien (05/04/2026)
Healthy aromas on opening, slow oxygenated for 5 hours then decanted and drank over the next two. Beautifully resolved mature Bordeaux, lovely mix of red fruits, cedar and light oak on the nose, quite refined in a fully mature way. Fine redcurrant infused fruit, hint of raspberry, sandalwood, incense, and a touch of tobacco , couldn’t be more St Julien. Lovely mature wine holding its own. Refined, lingering, softly mature wine. Caught at a lovely point in its life. (93 pts.)

2004 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (05/04/2026)
1/12 First from a case recently taken out of store. Coravined a couple of glasses. Pristine condition, light gold, in fact still youthful with a hint of oak, melon, beeswax, tea and fennel on the nose, rich wine, herb and fennel, yello fruits, apple, quite classic white Graves. An excellent start to a case. (92 pts.)

I'm glad the 1964 Las Cases showed well. I don't think I've ever had it, but I have had a lot of 1964s over the years, and with the exception of Latour, Montrose and the wines from Graves, I've never had a great wine from the Left Bank.

The year of the mid-harvest deluge. The rains came on 8th October and continued for two weeks. According to Michael Broadbent Leoville Las Cases harvested from 24th Sept to 9th Oct so must have got most of their grapes it before the rains came.

Mmm sounds divine. Boy, aged LLC can be something special, like the 1962 we've had a couple times.
