Two 1995 Bordeaux wines for Easter

Post by JCNorthway »

We had my brother-in-law and his wife for Easter dinner. I chose two bottles to accompany a leg of lamb main course. 1995 Angelus was the first bottle I hve opened of this wine - out of my collection of 4. I also opened a 1995 Grand Puy Lacoste. I've opened several of these over the years, and every time I've felt it was not ready yet.

After tasting both wines, I decided to decant both of them to give them a couple of hours of air. They both were fabulous wines to go with the lamb dish. In fact they really needed food to show their best. The Angelus was just a tad more developed and open while the GPL still needed a bit of coaxing in the glass to show its best. I would give them both around 95 points. And they were very much appreciated and enjoyed by everyone.

Nice wines John.

Angélus is a wine i did not had very often. GPL i had many, but the 1995 for the first time last summer at Jim’s place. I liked it a lot, as the 1995 Lagrange tried at the same time.

I don’t have 30 yo old Bordeaux, wish i had some.

Nice contrast in your mini-vertical, Jon. I have drunk almost all of the 95s I purchased on release. I do have a few in Oregon that I bought at auctions. I think that overall 1995 is a better vintage than 1996, because while 1996 is better on the left bank, the 1995 right bank wines are far superior to the left bank ones.

Super wines, Jon. My ‘95s are long gone, but I remember loving the Angelus. Don’t recall having the ‘95 GPL.

Both awesome wines in my experience, 1995 GPL is best GPL ever, in my book.

I’ve been drinking through cases of both the 95 and 96 GPL. Both are very good, the 95 is not yet ready but the 96 is. I prefer the latter because I prefer the 96 vintage at this stage in their evolution.
