Seeking advice on wine carrier for flight to SF
What do you guys recommend?
Every year I wrap up my wines in styrofoam in boxes and shove them into my suitcase.
Last year my suitcase was searched, and my 3L of 1989 Lynch Bages was sitting there exposed in my suitcase.
I could probably use something that carries 12 bottles.

The inexpensive way to go is a 12-bottle styro shipper. You can attach a handle to it but a full 12-bottle shipper is a hassle to lug around. I highly recommend Wine Cruzer. Basically a Pelican case with foam inserts, with models to fit any number of bottles. Pricey but they do get the job done nicely, very easy to roll. I have the decanter plus 5-bottle version. Stuart has an excellent piece of wine luggage as well - hope he chimes in with where to get it.

Thanks David, that 8 bottle version looks like it might be a good size for me.

My WineKaddy holds 12 bottles. It is basically a styrofoam shipper encased in metal. I think that now they only make 3, 6, and 9 bottle carriers.

That looks good too. I definitely need something like those products to carry my stash to SF.

The one I have been using for years is the http://www.casesbypelican.com/wine-carrier.htm
I'm confident if the baggage carrier opened at 32,000 ft., my wines would be OK when the case hit the ground.
It sounds like the same one David is using. Max cap 8 bottles, though.

Jim, is this is for SF, get 1-2 styrofoam 12-pack shippers and check them. There are also bigger stryrofoams.

but probably you can get used at a wine store.
If it is for permanent use, get the other suggestions, but they are for 6 bottles usually due to the weight limit.
If it is only bordeaux bottles, you can fit 14 bottles plus a half sautern in the shippers used by Premier Cru which are side laying. This will be less than the 50 pound limit.

I think 12 bottles in a styrofoam box is under the 50 lb limit. 12 in my WineKaddy is a bit over 50 lbs, so I usually pack 11 bottles plus openers.

If they are 12 bordeaux bottles it is 40 pounds, if they are all Schraders, Saxum, they are 50 or more.stefan wrote:I think 12 bottles in a styrofoam box is under the 50 lb limit. 12 in my WineKaddy is a bit over 50 lbs, so I usually pack 11 bottles plus openers.
So if you use a 15 pack styro, it is 49 pounds.

I don't like the 15=pack styros. The wines lay flat, and if TSA opens and unpacks, they may not go back in properly. I prefer the 12=bottle styros.
