HWSRN: 2003 Pontet Canet is "spectacular."
In this month's Wine Advocate, He Who Shall Remain Nameless scores the 2003 Pontet Canet -- a past BWE wine of the year -- an outstanding 95+, calling it "spectacular," a "superstar of the vintage...." Still incredibly young, He says. Patience will reward those who invested in this black beauty. A stunning wine indeed!

It was very good to excellent when I last had it a year ago at Mr. Vino's, but not spectacular. It needed a long time in a decanter and was still outshone by some older Bordeaux. I think Tom, Jay and Chris, who were there, would agree. It may yet turn spectacular, but it needs time.

It needs to be decanted 8 to 24 hours.

That sounds about right.

Dumb as a box of rocks when I opened it about 5 years ago

If you have more, I would wait another 5 years to open the next one.

I will crack open my case at the 20 year mark and will certainly not uncork my 3L before then.
Re: HWSRN: 2003 Pontet Canet is "spectacular."
That's very wise, Jim, because we all know that once you open the case, it will be gone in a month!

Those that wrote 2003 off were wrong.

I have 9 of the 2003's. I agree they need time to shine.
I also have:
2x1996
10x2000
5x2004
12x2005
I think the 1996 Pontet Canet may be close to ready. Anyone feel it is ready, or any of the others I listed?

I have a case each of the 1996, 2003, and 2004, and a 3L of 2003.
And a 6L of 1994.
So you think I should drink up those 1996s?

Come on Mr. Leve, you aren't a real red Bordeaux lover? I thought you were...

If you were asking me I would tell you to try a bottle of each before making your decision on what to do (ie. to sell, to trade or to keep).
