Top 3 Communes

What are your top 3 communes, including Left bank Medoc, Pessac/Graves, Right Bank and Sauternes/Barsac?

Mine are: Pauillac, St Estephe and Pomerol

A very tough question.

I would say Saint-Julien (consistant cab sauv quality), Pomerol (consistant merlot quality) and Pauillac (for the peak quality wines).

My fouth would be Pessac (for the balance).

I feel very bad just answering that question.

I find this question a little hard to answer only b/c I buy wines not communes but in the spirit of the question, when looking at my inventory by the numbers it would go Saint Julien, St Estephe and then Pauillac with St Emilion not to far behind.

when i taste a great Margaux
for me it's breathtaking, it's enthralling, it's thought provoking, but unfortunately this experience doesnt happen enough

I find great pleasure in most if not all communes but to rank top 3 is tough because changes from vintage to vintage and certainly we all have our favourite Chateaux. If forced based on the three giving me the greatest enjoyment would be:

Pomerol
Pauillac
Pessac
.....triple P

Margaux is certainly a very close 4th and could have ranked it higher with Margaux,Palmer, du Tertre, Malescot, d'Issan, Rausin Segla etc usually rocking pretty good since the 80s.

If asked on another day I could easily go

St Julien at times moves me but I'm not as impressed as some by the commune and doesn't rank in my top three.

If it was red Burg, I'd say Vosne, Gevry, Chambolle in that order.
White - Puligny, Meursault and Chassagne. Though hard to leave out Corton-Charlemagne.

For Bordeaux, wow, what a tough question.
So a forced choice would be:

Margaux
St Emilion
St Julien

Other may be surprised I have not included Paulliac with its three 1ers Crus, but Margaux makes wines unlike anywhere else in the world,with a wonderful violet, blueberry and plummy flavour.
As I have got older, I have also come to appreciate the wines of St Emilion more, and did not include Pomerol as there more nice wines in St Emilion and the top Pomerols are too expensive for me.
St Julien wines are consistently good with more fruitiness than St Estephe or Paulliac.
I like Pessac/Graves, but not as much as the other appellations.

White Burg:
- Meursault, Puligny, Chassagne (St Aubin for value)
Red Bordeaux:
- St Julien, St Emilion, Pauillac (ask Alex for value)

- Pessac, Sauternes, Barsac (but best Monbazillac are top)

Honestly, when blind I have a hard time figuring what commune is what.

Maybe some extreme Graves might stick out to me - like a charry LMHB or something.

But I wouldn't want to bet money on picking communes blind.

Probably give a different answer tomorrow, but today coming off last night's wonderful duo of 85 Cos and 85 Lynch, I'd start with Pauillac, then St. Estephe, then St. Julien. I want to say Pomerol but I just don't drink it often enough to call it a favorite...
