A nice Champagne and 3 so-so white

Saturday evening.

Deutz Champagne: very good, with notes of white and yellow fruits, a touch of oak, and slight nutty oxidation, and very dry. Plenty of fine bubbles. Remains light and airy on the palate.

3 white wines were okay, but so-so… Note: I like fresh white wines and/or wines with a certain complexity.

2023 Riesling Joseph Chromy Tasmania: always interested in tasting Australian Rieslings. This one seemed rather uncomplex (lots of petrol, smoke), lacking fruit and acidity. I prefer the entry-level Rieslings from Léon Beyer/Hugel.

2023 Chablis Domaine Genillotte: a good wine, but nothing special. The nose is more floral/fruity, not very intense, and the palate again lacks freshness. No shellfish/mineral notes, making it a decent Chardonnay, but not a Chablis.

2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Domaine Auvigue: once again, low acidity… a buttery Fuissé with predominantly yellow fruit aromas, a rich and full-bodied palate, butter, a touch of oak, yellow apples, yellow flowers. Some may appreciate this style, and I understand, as it was the best of the three, but for me it still lacks freshness, it's a bit soft, and remains on the rich side, unbalanced by slightly acidic fruit and/or a healthy bitterness. Give me a good Saint-Véran instead…

Glad to hear you enjoyed the Deutz. I've enjoyed it in the past though I have never actually bought it for myself. And sorry about the Pouilly Fruisse. If you can get Domaine Barraud wines in Canada, try the Pouilly Fuisse Cuvee Alliance. I have found it enjoyable and consistent in quality over the past 3-4 years. Just don't buy all of it
