Elgin is a relatively cool climate in SA and it shows. This is a rather pretty Bordeaux blend. With the baked bean aromas and much Merlot in the blend my first thought was that if Pichon Lalande were a plain Haut-Médoc (maybe a Cru Bourgeois) this is what it would be like. It has all the dark fruit and pencil shavings I like in the Médoc but no vulgar or obvious oak aromas. Medium bodied and refreshing, ripe but no vulgar sweetness or oak. Refreshing, savoury finish. Quite an elegant style. I like it. Certainly best with a chunk of something bloody on the plate.
