2009 - bought at 700 Danish kroner pr. bottle ~ app.92.5 €

2010 - offered today in Denmark at app. 1095 Danish kroner ~ 144.6 €

I'm not buying. Btw 2009 is better wine imho than 2010. Ridiculous price for 2010!!

I'm calling for a boycott of the 2010 vintage!

Don't worry. If the prices are truly being manipulated, as some claim, they will come down.

Sad, I bought (with some hesitation/dismay as prices rose) through 2009 @ $110/btl, but this is crazy. Will look to pick up a few more bottles, if I can find the right price (which will probably now escalate...), of 08, 03, 04, 02 and 07, but otherwise I'm done buying PC

Ridge Monte Bello is a touchstone of sorts for me -- when any cab-based or bordeaux blend wine drifts too far north of the $100 give or take that I'd spend to add another great bottle of Monte Bello to my cellar (just bought some more 07, which is fantastic), I start losing interest. I did buy a bunch of 09s early in the game -- PC, Malescot, Leoville Poyferre, Duhart Milon, Pavie Macquin, Beausejour Duffau, Clinet, Tertre Roteboeuf -- and may add few more odds and ends on pre-arrival. Tertre Roteboeuf was my only 09 acquisition north of $150 (and it was less than a case purchase), and I'm probably out of the T-R game forever now as well . I'm hoping 2010 Grand Puy Lacoste and Beausejour Duffau will be reasonably priced, but I'm not optimistic...

Holy moly, I can just imagine what the Canadian price will be (typically an increase of anywhere from 50% to 100% over the US price!). I've checked my local wine store's holdings and I can get the 2004 for $75. The US price must be really attractive.

I thought 2010 was superb, I prefer the style to 09... I don't think you could claim one is better than another. The style is different!

However, I thought 08 price was high but bearable! I have two cases which have been split with friends since to ease my cash flow! One will be sold and we will drink the other. 09 for me was too high... But given the quality I could see why people would buy first tranche but otherwise, it was a big NO even at first tranche. I think that this year the price is absurd... I reckon I will be able to buy it for the same if not cheaper in 10 years for the 2010, or I just drink all my 08s!

If Les Cruzelles follows the trajectory that La Chenade did, then I will be hoping and praying it is less than £150 a case and that Moulin St Georges is less than £250, but I'm not holding my breathe! I know that my other favourites will be expensive... Over £1000 a case if not more, and thus I will even be out of buying in 6s!! I am just a few days away from a full on boycott!

This is still a good vale compaed to first growths, super seconds and a few other premium world class wines in the world. However, compared to 99.99 percent of wines produced it is very overpriced.

With approximately 12 cases in the cellar from 1996-2005 (and an early case order of 2009 at $109) I'm not remotely tempted at $160.

the 2010 Pontet Canet was released here for $215 which is about $US170.
I'm no longer interested in it.
I just bought some more 01, 02 and 03s for a fraction of that.

Yet I am finding most 10's are coming out at prices comparable to 2009 in Singapore dollar terms.

By the way, I've just bought a 3 br condo here for $S 2M.
That's about $US 1.6M.
Ouch.
My waterfront property in Sydney with well over 1,000 sq metres of land is not worth much more than that.
And my 3 acres of land in Tasmania cost $A 99,000.
Here you buy it by the sq foot.

If you taste these Friday as you'd mentioned in your 02 PC thread, I'll be very interested to hear your impressions. I've thought about buying a bit more '03, though the cheapest price in the States seems to be $85-90 USD. Bought 6 more btls of 08 PC yesterday for $100, anticipating that the price will start drifting upward. 07 PC is a very tasty wine, going for about $75 here.

Some in the UK, still seem to think PC is good value compared to firsts and Cos, yes! But in the real world?

It is a great wine, but for that money I can have 24 bottles of 06 Monprivato! I know where I'd put my money! I'm seriously thinking of selling all my Bordeaux younger than five years in protest except for Sauternes and a few odd cases that I paid nothing for and are still at a price I think is fair!

Well done Jono. At anything over $70 or so, Pontet Canet is out of my price range.

Cmon Jono there is no need to go over the top. A boycott of the twenty-tens should suffice

I confess I bought a case of Pontet-Canet 2009...but only because Alex recommended it, reckons that it is one of the finest young wines he has ever tasted and insists that (unlike Cos for example) it isn't Parkerised (plus the fact they use Clydesdales in the vineyard, which add their own special kind of nutrient to the soil). It may be the last major EP I ever buy unless I win the lottery and we get a global depression.

Well done, Comte. Purchases of 2009 are authorized without need for exemption application.

When we started BWE eleven years ago we could get the outstanding 1996 Ponet Canet for $25.

Hey, it was me and others who said that the 1996 and 2003 vintages of Pontet Canet were "first growth quality," I guess I shouldn't be shocked that the wine has jumped to $175.

08 Calon-Segur and 6 Bottles of Pontet-Canet.
My 09 Sauternes and if some other stuff comes at the 10 price I hope (but it won't) I have my Article 5.2 exemption although if it comes at the price I want it at, there will have been no need for it (just a sign of my protest).

To be honest, I don't like speculation in wine. Modest inflation is fine and expected, but I've decided that being one of the stalwarts who went long on 08 (which is definitely early drinking and Burgundian in style) and bought more than I coups actually afford at the time and with 09, 10, not only am I priced out. But have lost allocations of things that I'd expect to offered. Even my Batailley and Poujeaux 09s were sent off to some speculating unPpreciative lowlife (I have no evidence of this however).

Well, it can all go back and sit in someones warehouse rotting (unless I know it is going to blow my mind!). Even the Lynch can go... I can buy back vintages and classic like 02 with the proceeds.

I'm turned off EP now (apart from going to taste it in April), and think it is time to make a bigger stand than simply boycotting 2010. Again who buys it, people are saying it is a strong campaign... The smoke and mirrors continues. They need a bigger kick up the backside than I originally thought.

I confess to buying some 2010 Pontet Canet, mainly because it was the best wine I tasted in April (including all the 1st Growths) and I am a bit of an eco-freak. I would love for all of Bordeaux to follow the example of Pontet Canet and Guiraud in Sauternes and tread the organic/bio-dynamic route. If they did then I might be able to get good 'green' wine at a reasonable price.

The price is what people are prepared to pay and it is mainly being driven by speculation and eastern markets not oddballs like me. Oh and peer pressure probably plays a really big part too, both from growers and buyers (e.g Lynch Bages at the same price as Pontet Canet which I would never think of buying).
