Back in the candy store, and we don't drink enough wine

Post by stefan »

This week 14 boxes of wine were delivered to my house, so I have been quite busy. It is really a chore finding places for so much wine, but I get a surge of adrenalin seeing the bottles, many of which I do not remember purchasing. It is like going into a candy store as a child and getting wide eyed from all the goodies. The problem is that I have too little storage for all the wines I buy; correction, Lucie & I don't drink enough wine to make room for the newcomers. So, despite the fact that we have to go to a wine dinner tonight, I opened one of the arrivals to go with sauteed crab on bib lettuce (which strained my culinary skills to produce).

2005 Marc Colin Chassagne-Montrachet Les Encegnieres. Les Encegnieres is a lieu-dit, so this is just a village wine despite the fact that it is just below Batard-Montrachet and was often sold as Batard_Montrachet before that appellation was delineated. Anyway, this C-M has a lovely floral Chassagne nose, proper acidity, and would surely have a long life expectancy except for the dreaded premox plague. At $30 (sic), this is an incredible bargain as long as not too many bottles are afflicted. stefan 92. Lucie 90-91.

Great news, stefan. Are you experiencing much premox on your 2005 white Burgs? I won't buy anything older than 2009 (which fortunately is very forward and drinks well now).

We have had some, Stuart. More troublesome is that the '05s will benefit from another five years in the bottle, but it is too great a risk to wait. When I opened the Marc Colin I got a hint of oxidation and thought, "Uh-oh", but fortunately that went away.

Stefan,
I'm reading your post to mrs vino in an attempt to make her think I'm reasonable with my wine buying. I also am running out of room and it's harder to get to my wine which is stored under our house. The solution would be to move to offsite storage but there's nothing that close to us and then I would think I have too much wine. BTW, the CT "pending delivery" feature is extremely helpful in tracking what's due. My insurance agent told me that utilizing CT is sufficient proof for coverage unless the bottles are dropped.

I have the opposite problem, Mr Vino. When I ask Lucie if I should buy a few bottles of a wine she recognizes, she says, "why don't you buy a case?" So our oversupply is mostly her fault.

I haven't switched to CT. I still keep inventory in an Excel spread sheet.

easy to transfer to CT. CT also integrates your subscriptions for easy reference. Not affiliated in anyway of course though Eric Levine and I are FB friends. Hmmm.....I would like to hear Lucie's reaction to your comment :D

Fortunately for me, Lucie does not often visit BWE. But this morning she gave me another headache. She says we should build a wine room. She suggested converting the garage, but I think I talked her out of that. I said maybe we could build one behind the garage, but, fortunately, that looks not practical. Adding a second floor to the garage looks possible and we could fit it so that it could be turned into an au pair suite by subsequent owners, but I am not excited by having a second floor wine room even if we have a large dumbwaiter installed. Her latest is converting part of the garage, which looks doable but would not yield enough space to have a dining area (part of her dream). I suggested that instead we up our wine buying budget by $25K for one year, but she said we could do that in addition to the wine room by having me collect social security now instead of waiting until age 70.

Lucie has turned into a wine monster! Here is another example. For lunch today we had salmon mousse and
bourekas left over from a wine dinner last night with a bottle of Eric Rodez 1999 Brut. At the end of lunch Lucie asked, "is there any Champagne left?" I said, jokingly, "it is gone, but there are a couple of bottles in the wine fridge behind you," and she retorted, "which one should I open?" I forced her to decide and she finally did something sensible by opening a NV Veuve Cliquot instead of an 2002 Pol Roger.

Stefan, I don't think you are going to get a ton of sympathy for this problem of yours...

I always thought Lucie had good taste and judgment, and this confirms it.

Does anyone use Vinocella app?

Of all the apps I have tried so far, I found this one to be more comprehensive than any other app out there. You can also write notes, track inventory, attach pics, organize bottles in racks, and what not...I found it real easy, since all I have to do is open the app to choose a bottle before even venturing into the cellar. Also, I find it easy to update the inventory, since the phone is always with me. It's around 5 bucks...
