TN: 2005 Château Les Grands Chênes (France, Bordeaux, Médoc)

    Dark red to rim. Dark cherry, cassis, beef on nose, full body, ripe fruit, bit of oak, no real complexity but smooth and very pleasing, very good to excellent.

    Dark red to rim. Dark cherry, cassis, hints of rare beef on the nose, full body, ripe fruit, no real complexity but a smooth, nice drink, very good to excellent.

Never had the 2005.. The 2004 Les Grands Chênes was quite controversial.. so terribly woody. As we say in French, it was pure plank juice..

There was oak there, but not excessive for a wine with no pretensions towards greatness. Then again, I am fairly oak tolerant. Less so than in years past, but I'm not one to dump on a wine just because the oak is noticeable, so long as there is some fruit there...
