I paid $32ea. for the 4 LL I bought back in 2015 and the CT average is only $25.75 - but that was probably due to favorable en-primeur pricing.

I just turned 49. The cellar is full. The lockdown has been a “sobering” time. Wine hunting is now a chore instead of a fun pastime. Most of my past wine outlets have nothing worth buying anymore, especially Winebid. Prices are silly in general.

I feel ready to hang up my wine hunting spurs, and focus exclusively on my wine enjoyment skills. Time to start the 25 year process of drinking the cellar down (gosh, that sounds like a chore too said like that). I probably will need to reload on champagne and some white wine eventually, but I have a lifetime of highly curated red wine still in the cellar.

If we open 160 bottles a year from my cellar (so not including wine purchased while on vacation or off wine lists), I’ve got 18 years worth of wine even if I never buy another bottle to lay down. Everything I hear and see is that most wine lovers start drinking less in their 50s and really slow down in their 60s. I know there are many exceptions to this pattern, but I suspect it will apply to me and 160 bottles a year might end up being a substantial overestimate.

If I’m wrong and the cellar depletes rapidly, I can always dust off the credit card and enjoying buying some new stuff again as needed.

Put me and my cellar out to pasture!

With my purchase today of a case of 2016 Reserve de la Comtesse I now have exactly 900 bottles in my cellar.
If I live to 80 that will be 50 bottles per year on average.
That's about right.

Ha ha, when you get to be my age you slow down dramatically, Joel.
One of the main things that keeps me from drinking more is my trial practice, I just can't drink during the week when I'm in court almost every day, especially with five homicide cases pending.
Also, i usually fast about 3 months out of each year, which affects my average.

Hey, I'm about your age and according to Cellartracker I consumed 303 bottles (5 were only 375ml) of wine last year. My wife and parties probably contributed to no more than 40 of those consumed bottles.

OTOH, I did slow down a little. In 2018 the data says I consumed 329 bottles.

I don't think theres anything wrong with less than a bottle a day when you're sharing and have someone to help Chris!

No guilt here. I'm running 3 days a week for exercise and feeling pretty good in general.
It helps that I rarely drink other beverages with more than a few calories per glass (seltzer with a squeeze of lime is my other beverage of choice) and practically no other alcohol.

As far as buying wine, my cellar has most of what I want for aging purposes, so only near term drinkers to keep my bottle count around 800 for now.

The problem Joel is that we see things in some of these cases that make you want to not stop with just a glass or two. There is a very high alcoholism rate among trial lawyers, think Paul Newman in The Verdict.

This Alaska case I have is unbelievable, the crime scene back in 1993 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is the worst I've ever seen, and I've seen some bad shit. We just got dumped with 5,000 new pages of discovery this week, much of it that casts very serious doubt in my mind about whether my client did it. Meantime, he's sitting in the Fairbanks Correctional Center in East Butt Fuck Alaska with like no trial date in sight because of Corona. It looks like this case is going to take a good two months or more to litigate, I'm going to need to ship several cases to Alaska up ahead of me and my team from Maine for the trial. I gotta reread what Churchill ordered brought over before he stayed at the White House in World War II, I think it was several cases of Pol Roger just for starters.

Good point Jim, I was just talking with family about how a lot of lawyers are alcoholics. Glad you're on top of it. Thats part of what I love so much about wine, that i just sip and think and appreciate and just have 1-3 glasses. (Except at crazy events and wine dinners of course, I am working on my spitting).

Tough job I am sure. I could not(or would not) want to do it. I hope it works out for your client if that is the case. David brought a 2002 Roger WC to dinner in December. It was good, but seemed quite young to me. Opened up after an hour or so. The Pre-ID Krug(2004-2011) that Eric brought was the more interesting of the night.

Speaking of champagne, two recent values that I am fond of are the Jean Laurent Brut Rose NV (and ages well, had both a 2011 and 2017 disgorgement). Also Grongnet BDB NV. Very pleased with both. And both for $33-$37. Just bought a case of the Jean Laurent at the discount.

Of course a new month means a new NH sale. This month its Italy but there's not much I'm looking for right now except 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco, grabbed a case. Loved the 2015 and 2016 is even better. While I was there I found an eclectic 2001 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo in magnum. The price was just too good to pass up. Someone ordered it a while ago but never picked it up so I got it for a good discount.

My short note from the bottle I opened up a couple of weeks ago, "Floral on the nose. Camphor, sour cherry and rubber on the palate. Good now with food but give it 5 years and it will be a knockout." I'll probably check in on it in about 3 years but I think giving it 5 years will give it time to come together.

Thanks. I too liked them on release and was wondering if they would take 10-20 years to fully bloom. I think I can keep hands off for 5 years.

Joe, I'm wondering where you live, seeing this post. The Costco in Nashua NH has Malescot for the same price and I also picked up a few bottles. I haven't popped one yet and I'm trying to hold off as long as I can, lol.
