Patrick - LMAO

and Jacques - it’s just as much the tariffs as it is our wonderful 3-tiered system of importation; it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Anything Kermit Lynch touches gets the Fully Monty price wise.

They trademark the wazzoo out of the labels/names so that its much harder for grey market imports to happen with anything in their portfolio, so consumers either pay the price, or go without.

They help their represented estates especially the main French ones they have long associations with (Brunier, Barruols etc.) with much more of their business, marketing than would be normal for an importer/distributor.

Using some auction credits at K&L, I fiinally scratched the Beaujolais itch with the following:
-2014 Stephane Aviron Morgon Cote du Py VV 1 bottle
-2017 Stéphane Aviron St-Amour VV 1 bottle
-2017 Stephane Aviron Chénas VV 1 bottle
-2017 Stéphane Aviron Fleurie Domaine de la Madrière VV 1 bottle
-2018 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie Cuvée Tardive 3 bottles
-2018 Thivin Côte de Brouilly 3 bottles
-2018 Thivin "Reverdon" Brouilly 3 bottles
-2018 Foillard Morgon Côte du Py 3 bottles
-2018 Diochon Moulin-á-Vent Vieilles Vignes 1 bottle

Between OrlandoBobby's paeans, William Kelly's glowing notes, and the cheap pricing (only the Foillard is >$26), these are hard to resist! I plan to host a tasting with these, as the only ones I've had before are the Thivins and Foillard.

Also grabbed some "inexpensive" ($35-$50) PYCM white burgundies:
-2018 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey St-Aubin "Le Banc" 3 bottles
-2018 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Rully Blanc "Les Cailloux" 3 bottles
-2018 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc "Bout de Monde" 4 bottles

I bought some from that same shipper, back in the 90's.

Both bottles had a tinny note to my nose, but others didn't pick it up.

Clotilde Davenne Chablis 2018, Chablis VV 2016 and Blanchots Grand Cru 2014 - one bottle of each - for 15, 18 and 42 euros respectively
5 bottles of Tapenot Maume Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte (3x01, 2x02) for £220 - worked out at just over £50 a bottle after commission
6 bottles of Tapenot Maume Gevrey Chambertin 2017 for £250 all in including tax and delivery
6 bottles of Tapenot Maume Gevrey Chambertin 2015 for £179 ex tax and delivery - worked out at a tad more than the 2017
6 bottles of Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin VV 2016 for £55 each
6 bottles of De Montille Volnay Champans 2010 for £69 each
6 bottles of Riverby 2019 NZ Chardonnay Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (three each) for £142
Xavier Gerard Cote Rotie - six bottles each of the 2015 and 2016 - I think I paid £200 in bond for both six lots in a Farr Vintners sale

It is hard to win much at auctions these days unless you suffer from overbid syndrome.

I've found Aviron's bojo to be a touch more zippy than I like so don't buy them anymore.

I had my first Foillard over the spring and it was fabulous. It had been sitting on my rack for a while and I should really have tried it earlier. Nice spectrum of wines but hopefully you have a plan to consume them sort of soon. I know some of them can age, but I'm not sure it benefits them all that much.

Another case of the 2014 Pepiere Thebaud and a case of the 2017 Pepiere Clisson. Good Muscadet for a song is something I have trouble passing up. Also placed some no money down pre-arrival orders on several 2016 Barolo’s Burlotto, Mascarello and E Pira but we shall soon see as I don’t like to count my chickens before they hatch.

Based on that Bertheau I tasted and posted about, I picked up some 2016 Bertheau Chambolle Musigny despite the cost. 3*C-M Village and 3*C-M Charmes premier cru. Steep prices but I was excited about what I drank and found it pretty unique — closest I have experienced is Hidelot-Noellat but this was actually better. So my self control buckled

Calon Segur 2014 x 4.

Picked these up at an auction last night. There was only one other bidder so got them for a fair price (NZ$130). I had bought a couple a few years back, but pleased to now have 6 in total.

Auctions are strange beasts though. There were some wines that attracted very little interest (2005 Giscours etc) and went for very little, whilst other wines went for way above their market value. I guess like house auctions, it only takes 2 determined bidders and all logic fly's out the window...

It’s very rare that the stingy man from Quebec gives a score of 90+, let alone a 94!!! :o Mind you, his 94 rating is almost as rare as a dodo bird... ....His fabulous tasting notes of the wine peeked my interest in this wine, for sure. But in addition to this Québécois’ 94 rating, what sold me was the 12.5 alcohol level this wine flaunts!!!! Wow, that’s one heck of an achievement when surrounded by other names going gang busters on alcohol levels!!!

So I snagged...

2 bottles of 2016 Gilles Barge Cuvée du Plessy Côte Rôtie, 65/per...

On other note I also snagged in auction...

2 bottles of 2016 Ch Fonreaud under 20 each, all in...

Yes indeed Jacques it is Francois rather than Jacques, I should have RTFL. (When I was at school my physics teacher used to say, read the question, RTQ, which graduated to RTFQ.) Ah well I am sure they will be nice and I won’t have to wait as long for them to come round.

Yes unfortunately Patrick. These 14s were £480in bond for six, exactly double what I paid for the 2007 vintage about seven years ago. That price was below the lowest in the market. The 2015 and 2016s are significantly higher in price but in Cote Rotie pretty every vintage has been a winner in recent times. The 2014s are lighter than the 15s and 16s which is probably a plus. The CT notes on this pushed me over the edge. The brother, Jean-Luc who went out in his own after he fell out with Jean-Paul, now produces a wine called Terraces which by all accounts is excellent and much more reasonably priced, in fact roughly half the price. I took a punt on his 2016.

Man, prices are so much better in Europe!

The 2018 François Carillon Puligny villages is $60 on pre-arrival (lowest price in the USA):

ChateauVin, if your a Côte Rôtie fan, especially when the viognier violet flowers/aprcots mix with the blackcurrants/smoky syrah, that Gilles Barge wine should give you lot of satisfaction. Right now, it is probably the wine i'm most looking forward to taste back soon, ex aqueo with the 2017 Glantenay Volnay-Santenots.

I'm looking forward what you'll think about it.

I think that will prove to be spot on Patrick. Even 2018 Chablis taste a bit too ripe For my liking. Stick to 2017 and 2016 if they are still around. Not sure what the word is in 2019 white burgs - prob far too early.
