TN 1995 Calon Segur

Post by mike reff »

  • 1995 Château Calon-Ségur - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (4/17/2011)
Great dark color and very robust style. Deacnted for two hours and continued to get better over the course of the night. Flavors of berries, cassis, and some lead or herbaceous qualities. Just beginning to get complex, many years ahead.

Nice to read your notes lately, Mike.

Calon is often a big, kind of backward wine in its youth.

It fairly frustrating that a 16 year-old wine is still "young", but this is the bane - and the glory - of great Bordeaux!

All the best,
Alex R.

I have one bottle of this in my cellar, one of the first wines I recall buying for cellaring.
You may recall this wine was featured in that famous Wine Spectator Suckling article on the 1995 vintage, circa 1998.

I have not been brave enough to pop any of mine yet.

Thanks for the TN Mike.
Based on a few that I had lately, I agree that these '95s need a lot of decanting time. I don't have a lot and I'm very gun-shy about popping one these days.

Thanks for tasting note. Calon Segur is one of favorite wines. I love the austerity that it presents. It always needs years to reach maturity. Has anyone else noticed that Wine Spectator never reviews this wine...I guess they don't advertise? Funny I only have one bottle of this vintage. My mistake. The only serious juice from '95 which we have consumed multiple bottles of has been Prieure Lichine, which has been just lovely...no rush but beautiful.

Bought a bottle of Calon Segur in Bordeaux 1995, it was on sale in the local super market (!) That's just how they do things there.
Was very drinkable back then but wish I had saved it now... Guess a lot of people say that about a lot of things, not just wine.
