TN: 1982 Gruaud Larose
TN: 1982 Gruaud Larose
Heavy Cordier funk for the first hour and a quarter. Once it cleans up the aromas of luscious earth, cigar box and black currants become apparent. Fully mature and smooth the light to medium bodied cedary finish lingers on. At peak now and very friendly.

Thanks for posting. We had the 83 not long ago, and it was in fine fettle.
Many Bordeaux lovers feel that Gruaud Larose is under-rated (and therefore - relatively speaking - underpriced).
I'm one of them .
All the best,
Alex R.

Re: TN: 1982 Gruaud Larose
Why can't Bordeaux make wines like that anymore?
Re: TN: 1982 Gruaud Larose
I think it's an issue of "want" not "can't."
The '82 Gruaud and Talbot were my first case purchases. Sadly gone but fondly remembered. I'm not surprised to hear it is still going strong. Thanks for the note.

The 82 Gruaud is one of the most complex and layered wines I've ever had, I just remember the leather, coffee, tobacco, etc., etc., etc.

The 1982 Gruaud Larose was one of my favorite, at a Friday dinner organized by winonachief. A very great wine.

Sadly my last 82 Bordeaux. I have half of the bottle in a 375 in the fridge to finish tomorrow and I will savor every drop.

Jim, they don't make wines like that before because they have realized the power of the clean winemaking facilities. "Cordier funk" we all now know as brett. Once new owners arrived they cleaned things up.

Then I hate clean cellars

Harry,
Most of the time I funk averse but there is something about that Cordier funk in Talbot and Gruaud that I love. Agree the recent vintages of Gruaud is lacking but they are still making a beautiful reasonably priced product. Certainly the Rhone wines have not cleaned up their act yet with funk on over drive and for some reason I dislike it immensely!! No explanation but it's just me.

That 1982 Gruaud Larose is one of my absolute favorite wines. Furthermore, 1982, 1983 and 1986 Gruaud Larose and Talbot are all wonderful, as are 1982, 1986 and 1989 Meyney. Gruaud Larose was also very fine in 1981 and 1985. Love all those wines. There is some funk but not over the top, just enough to add complexity. Cordier was at the top of their game in the 1980s.
