1996 Pontet Canet
1996 Pontet Canet: Muted at first but after receiving a 30 min decant, boy was it roaring....lead pencil, cedar, smoke and dust.... Cassis and light spice notes... Great balance of acidity and tannins. A great pleasure and made my evening... Alive, well and in the sweet spot right now. Have one more bottle left...
2004 Comte Armand Clos Des Epenaux: Gave a 30 min decant for this one also. Very enjoyable with red fruit, slight menthol notes and cherries. Light on its feet... Considering the vintage, great effort by the domaine.

CV - how obtrusive are the tannins on the 96 Pontet? Last time I had it they were quite spikey.
The 2004 red burgundies are under-rated with an unfortunate ladybird reputation. Aubert De Villaine really rates his 2004s.

Not at all spikey. They were there, but not obtrusive at all...Comte Flaneur wrote:CV - how obtrusive are the tannins on the 96 Pontet? Last time I had it they were quite spikey.

When this wine is on, it is on.
Re: 1996 Pontet Canet
We had this in the spring and it was awesome
Re: 1996 Pontet Canet
I wasn't smart enough to be buying Pontet Canet in 1996.
Re: 1996 Pontet Canet
1994 is when the wines really started becoming something special. I overlooked that estate in the thread about 1994's.

Yes but we had a 1986 Pontet Canet in the late '90s at that fancy restaurant at the Hotel Elliot in the Town of Beans and it was sublime.1994 is when the wines really started becoming something special.
Re: 1996 Pontet Canet
What is amazing, is how that wine is good and how much you paid for it... Compared to the latest vintages.
But I must admit the 2009 was just extraordinary when we had it at the Chateau in May 2015.

I must admit Nic the 2009 was lost on me that day - that is what you call an embarrassment of riches, but I own a case on Alex's recommendation.
I also own a case of 1996 and am agonising on when to destorage it (yes I invented that word). Even though I own two cases I regret extracting my first case of Leoville Barton 1996, a year ago. Many of the 1996s need eons.
