Jono, that's an English/American translation thing, I think. "Quite good" to us means "very good" while to you I think it means what we would call "almost good." I think the '02 Dom is excellent, but it isn't a Bordeaux, and I think we need a Bordeaux for BWE WOTY. That said, nothing really hits me as a universal BWE WOTY this year as it has in past years. Lots of contenders mentioned above but no standouts.

Speaking of d'Armailhac the '99 absolutely crushed it in a recent blind tasting. An wonderous beauty.

David, quite can mean both very or slightly in British English depending on the context...

I was just being facetious!

I agree, I don't think anything that lots here have tried has really stood out this year. 89 Lafite was certainly a good choice last. Luckily I got to try some as well.

It's somewhat striking that there isn't any strong support for the idea of a 2005 Bordeaux BWE Wine of the Year. I mean, with it being the vintage of the century and all...

Very astute point, Chris. I think I felt that way last year too.

If voting for a BWE 2005, how about the 2005 Duhart Milon or the 2005 GPL?

I would like to see a 2005 Bordeaux myself too, but the BD not having had a convenient 2005, I think you better bet your money on something else. I think the BD drank way more 2005 Bourgognes than Bordeaux...

For me the 2005 Cantemerle would be the good choice, as it seem to be the first vintage of the rebirth of the Chateau (I think 05-06-08-09 received good reviews?).

I did not try the Duhart-Milon (I have some) or the Grand-Puy Lacoste, but would probably agree on these two, as regular favorites.

I also liked 2006 Haut-Batailley quite a bit, but it's not really a Wine of the Year type of wine...

A really amazing wine that I had this year was 2003 Yquem.

Sipping on a 2005 Haut Batailley and 2005 Brane Cantenac, just can't get my arms around this seemingly overrated vintage.

I know, I know, they're young, but extrapolating on my experiences with other young wines from other vintages, this vintage seems humorless and cold to me.

Three more days to get your 2010 BWE Wine of the Year nominations in!

Somehow when it comes to the great growths have to agree Jim, the 05s seem oddly similar without their typical characteristics of feeling of where they came from. 09 which for me is far more overrated in parts has more typicity.

However, there are plenty of petit chateau, that due to the weather have made super wines.

The 2005 Brane-Cantenac is boring, Jim? That's disappointing news. I have a case of it wine sleeping and it has always sounded like a wine I would like as the critics usually describe it as elegant and classic.

Duh, did I say Brane Cantenac?

I meant Boyd Cantenac.

I just poured the last glass from the bottle, what little I've had from it seemed a little better than the Haut Batailley, I'll see if it has improved.
